The Biggest Loser: Tears

Finally, an episode where I cared what happened. This week, the contestants went home for 18 days. I don’t remember them ever going home for that long at this point in a season, so it was interesting to see how they dealt with the pressures and temptations of normal life. Each had a goal of losing 5 percent of their body weight while at home. If they did, they would be immune from being voted off, even if their team lost the weigh-in. But even though they were off the ranch, a little of the ranch came with them. Almost immediately after arriving home, they all had to take part in a challenge in which they had to use rowing machines that had been delivered to their homes to row 10,000 meters. The winner would win $10,000. It was a very close race with Chism coming out on top by a mere 7 seconds over his dad, Mark. Kim was tops among the women, placing third.

In contrast to many of the recent episodes, there were several touching moments in this episode. My top three:

3. Megan was able to pull herself atop her horse easily, without the aid of her father or a stepladder and bringing her one step closer to her dream of being a barrel racer. It brought her dad to tears, and Megan was all smiles. I was really happy for her.

2. When Buddy lost 23 pounds, he hit three milestones — he lost more than the necessary 5 percent, he went below 300 pounds, and he was the first person this season to hit 100 pounds lost (Jeremy became the second a few minutes later). Buddy was most proud of that last accomplishment because 100 pounds was what he’d gained since the day he’d stood in a hospital room and watched his daughter breathe her last breath. His words brought a lot of tears to the eyes of his fellow contestants.

1. The red team had two people who didn’t meet the 5 percent goal — Mark and Kim. When the black team members kept hitting their goals, it looked like the red team was going to lose the challenge. Chism was the last member to weigh in and had to lose 12 pounds to keep his team and himself safe. He lost 11 and was automatically eliminated since he was the only member of the black team to not make his goal. Everyone started crying, including me, and Mark was distraught. He begged to be sent home so Chism could stay, but Chism, the youngest contestant at 19, told his dad to stay. He said that he (Chism) was no different than anyone else who stood on the scale and didn’t meet their goal. It was a very grown-up moment for the teen, and the trainers and Mark were proud of him for accepting his fate even though Chism was crying too. Members of both teams were sad to see him go, especially Mark and Chism’s best friend on the show, Jeremy. I’m going to miss him on the show too. He’s been one of the few bright spots this season.

They didn’t show a transformation moment really for Chism. Instead, he invited viewers to keep track of his progress through his weekly video blogs on the Biggest Loser website. He shows tidbits from his week — food, exercise, and wraps it up with a weigh-in.

What did you think of last night’s episode? Did you cry when Chism was eliminated?

If It’s Tuesday, It Must be Vegetable Day

Welcome to the first Tuesday Vegetable blog since I moved over from Saturday. Yesterday, Michelle posted a lovely piece about the fabulous produce available in the market in Florida. She has me longing for fresh pineapple and iced coffee.   (Okay, Michelle said nothing about the iced coffee    ) But those of us [...]

The Joy of Great Produce

When I lived in Texas, I got spoiled because I had access to amazing produce every day of the year.  I missed that so much when I moved to the DC area that I actually had dreams of driving to the grocery store down the street, and it had changed magically  to my favorite one [...]

Sustainability: The Prince and the Earth

I wasn’t going to do a full length blog today because as Trish mentioned on Tuesday, my Saturday posts will be moving to Tuesday starting this week, February 28th.   But yesterday Deb Stover posted a link on Facebook to an article in The Atlantic about a speech Prince Charles gave at Georgetown last May [...]

Five Friday Facts about Fabulous Five

We all know about the recommendations to have 5 a Day. It’s a great, simple step to ensure we all eat more fruits and vegetables. I love this recommendation because it’s easy to remember and easy to set as a goal. Those of you who visit regularly know I’m a big fan of SMART goals (Specific, [...]

Just Dance

By MJ Fredrick I’m here at Healthy Writer today to share my love for the Wii. The coach at my elementary school bought one for Fun Fridays, along with Just Dance. He gets all the kids to follow the moves and picks the best ones to take the controllers. Cool, right? I tried with the [...]

The Biggest Loser: Self-Control

This week’s excuse being tackled on The Biggest Loser was “I lack self-control.” I think at one time or another we’ve all struggled with that very thing. Often it’s what leads us into the overweight category to begin with. So with that excuse at the center of things, of course there was a temptation challenge [...]
