It’s that time again, a new year, a new resolve to get fit, be healthy and make it all work this time!! One of the great things about the seeming world-wide focus right now on weight loss is that great tips and hints and articles on the topic are abundant. Eating plans, healthier foods and how to prepare them, exercise tips, workout challenges, it’s all out there. Yes, I know it’s there year-round, but right now it almost seems like there is a competition to get the best, most insightful information out in front of as many people as possible. Hey, that works for me. I love how easy it is to find motivation!
This was particularly motivating for me. As weight loss is usually my goal, and time is usually my challenge, I tend to focus on cardio more than strength training. But this year, I want to change that. I loved this video of tips for people starting- or restarting – a strength program. I’ve read a lot of exercise articles and information over the years, and am always impressed when I learn something new. In this one, I learned that doing an upright row was a much better bicep exercise than curls!
Check it out:
So how about you? Are you incorporating strength training into your workouts this year? What’s your favorite strength move? Mine’s the squat. It used to be the bicep curl *g* but it’s lost it’s allure for the moment.
Great post and video, Tawny. It made me keen to get back to strength training and running!
For now, though, I’m trying to get my body back to health by trying to heal my back and realign my body through yoga (more on that later in the month!) I will definitely check this site out though when I’m ready!
Anna, the video inspired me, too. Actually I’m finding a lot of new videos that use different strength moves and combinations than I’ve used before, and they definitely make me want to grab the weights and get to it!
I’ve heard fabulous things about yoga, especially for back troubles. I can’t wait to read your post later
Ride that enthusiasm as long as you can.
Have you ever thought of doing P90X? I saw a bit on it on Dr. Oz, and it seemed like a lot of results in little time. I haven’t tried it yet and have heard it is pretty hard.
Hey Michelle
I’m hoping the enthusiasm, and the wisdom of experience, rides me through this for quite awhile *g* I’m almost go my goal weight, but know there’s no way it’ll stay off unless I have a strong foundation of strength training and cardio as a lifestyle. I’ve seen in all its painful glory what happens after working really hard to reach a weight goal, then in relief, quitting the exercise and diet ‘because I’m there and don’t have to be so careful.’ So… here’s hoping *g*
I have heard of P90X but haven’t really looked into it. A quick Google search brought up a lot of sites to buy the program, but not much details from people not selling something. I’ll have to check further, because like you, I have heard great things about it.
I do P90X. It’s my favourite program ever. But it’s a huge commitment – minimum 1 hour a day (except for the 48 min for cardio) and it is HARD. I was smart and started with the Power 90 program first (P90X’s predecessor) which brought up my fitness level so I didn’t die when I started P90X. I’d definitely recommend that depending on your fitness level.
You can also do a “Lean” version which is weights 2x a week and cardio/core stuff the other 4 days, with xStretch on day 7. I did lean first and liked it, but in the “Classic” version one of my favourite workouts is Plyometrics. I lost weight, but most of all I changed body shape and felt great! I’m doing 10 minute Trainer (another Beachbody product) with my husband right now, but commented the other day that I miss my P90X. I’m going to do another round really soon.
All the weights can be done with resistance bands and while I know the Beachbody site is heavy on sales, their customer service is FABULOUS and their products are top-notch. We have several of the bands and we’ve put them through a lot of abuse.
I do prefer using free weights for a lot of the exercises, but everything is doable with the bands. I LOVE bands.
Hope that helps – I’m doing a fitness Friday post on my blog this year and I’m going to be reviewing P90X in a couple of weeks.
Oooh, that’s great to know, Donna! Thank you so much for the P90X real review
I’m definitely going to have to give it a try. Probably after this book is turned in, since I won’t have an hour a day and time to fall apart as my muscles scream in protest until then. But that’s Feb, so I’ll make it my goal. Keep pushing the strength training now, in preparation for that. I’ll go look for the Power 90, too.
The P90X piece on Dr. Oz made it sound like you could do it in 10 minutes a day. Having to devote an hour to it a day is a disappointment. I might as well just do body pump at the gym. I love classes.
No, you can do a selection of P90X moves a day. 10 minute trainer you can do in 10 minutes, but even then it works best if you do 2 or 3 sessions a day. We’ve got 10 minute trainer too.
I’ve got a Power 90 review up on my blog today and I’m going to review P90X next week.
