Gone Running

I think I have lost my mind.

It all started with my idea of running a 5K at Walt Disney World. Hubby jumped at the chance, and we even decided to sign mom up too because she had just completed her first 5K earlier in the year. We had a ton of fun running the Family Fiesta 5K despite the early start time and the chilly temps.

We also went out the next day to cheer for the “crazy people” who were running the half-marathon. I’m looking at those folks—several of them in costume—and think to myself. That kinda looks like fun. Then I think to myself, “Self, what are you thinking? Why would anyone voluntarily run thirteen plus miles!!!” It didn’t help that Her Majesty picked up a tee-shirt at the Expo that said something along the lines of “I’m training for the 2013 half-marathon” and said, “Here, Mommy.”

So, here I am. I went to the Run Disney site (http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/events/rundisney/run-disney-training-consultant/index?page=walt-disney-world-half-marathon), and I took a look at the half-marathon training plan. It’s only three days a week: thirty minute runs on Tuesday and Thursday with a longer run on the weekends. I’m seriously thinking about it! For one thing I live in Atlanta and feel I should run the Peachtree 10K at least once. Training for a half would have to help with that, right? Right?

Well, I’m taking the plunge. In fact, it’s a Thursday as I’m writing this. I think I’ll go for a run right now.

Go you! My seven year old just starting doing C25K at school, so I’m doing it at home. If the dates work with our October trip to WDW we are going to try and do the 5k there. No way could I do the half marathon any time soon but I think it’s a great next goal! Go for it!!!

This is cool. I’d love to get the kids to do something like this because the boy child especially is not as in shape as he ought to be. I should have made him play outside more but between being paranoid about strangers and smog alerts, I don’t do as well as I ought in that department.

Good luck, and Disney is my fave place to run a 5K so far.

Congratulations on your run Sally! I never thought I’d enjoy running, or be able to do it due to health conditions, but meeting you that day was my first ever “event/race” and then I ran the half marathon the next day with the other crazies!

I cheered on the even-more-crazies (the full marathoners) the next day and now I think I’m going to try that next year! *Fingers crossed*

Whether you run 1 mile, 3 miles or 26 of them, getting out there and doing something is worth a cheer! Yay for you!

I think one of my fave shirts (aside from “I thought you said rum.) was the Half-insane shirt for the half-marathon. For some reason I thought you had to run the whole thing–when I saw there was a run/walk pattern I thought to myself that I could better handle that.

May you join the even-more-crazies next year!

  3. Wow, Sally! You are inspiring! Best of luck with the half marathon training! A couple work colleagues are running a Disney half-marathon. One of these years maybe I can get into running. :)

Thanks, Michelle! If you want to try running, a Disney 5K is a great place to start. There’s entertainment and fun medals and the course is nice and flat–at least the one through Epcot was. I think there’s a couch to 5K program on Run Disney somewhere. Running’s not for everyone (just ask my husband, but it’s a lot of fun to train/race with someone else.
