I have several family members who are diabetic, including my mom. And with my sweet tooth, I’m very conscious of managing my sugar intake so that I don’t follow in their footsteps. The last thing I want is to have to poke my finger with a glucose meter or, heaven forbid, take insulin shots. Lots of the time, diabetics or those hoping to avoid becoming diabetic think about all the foods they can’t have. So this article from Prevention that came in my e-mail today was of particular interest. It showcases a list of 14 Fantastically Healthy Foods for Diabetes. And the good news is that I like 12 of them. The only ones I don’t like are walnuts and peanut butter. Check it out to see if you like some of the items on the list.
What is your favorite way to get a sweet but healthful fix?
That was an interesting list. It’s really striking to me how many of these foods show up on other similar lists such as the Washington Post list of foods good for your heart, etc.
If I’m not eating a lot of sugary treats regularly, I can really appreciate the natural sweetness in fruits and vegetables. Roasted veggies in particular can be sweet – a favorite is roasted carrots and fennel. I also like certain herbal teas. Frozen bananas can taste like creamy frozen treats. I’ve heard frozen grapes and berries can be amazing. Bran has some sweetness – yoghurt w/ fruit and all bran can be sweet. If you are using greek yoghurt, a small touch of honey can add a lot of pleasure.
I just joined Pinterest recently, and yesterday I found an interesting sounding treat I’m going to try. I’ve not been able to make myself try yogurt — I just can’t get past the thought of it — but this was strawberries dipped in Greek yogurt and frozen. I’m going to give it a try for Valentine’s Day.
And speaking of Valentine’s Day, if you all have yummy recipes for main dishes, sides and desserts you’d like to share, I’d love to have them. I’d like to make a delicious but healthful dinner to surprise the hubby. The day will mark the 20th anniversary of when he proposed.
I have tons. What would you or he like to eat on Valentine’s day?
Would love a nice chicken or pork dish, some good veggie sides and a yummy, low-calorie dessert. Thanks!
This is interesting… will pass on the recommended list to my hubby… his blood work just came in last week and he’s not diabetic… but the sugar’s gotta go – down!
Thanks for an informative post! Will Tweet.
