I’m so excited to welcome 2012 and start a new year. In part, because I love the concept of a clean slate that the new year embodies. But also because, well, to put it bluntly, 2011 sucked. Every year brings challenges. That’s the nature of life. But last year the challenges were delivered by a fleet of dump trucks. That’s not to say I didn’t have plenty to give thanks for as I said goodbye to 2011. I did, and I’m probably more grateful for my blessings because the challenges highlighted them so vividly *g*
Do it probably makes sense that my first reaction when I received the invitation to join the SparkPeople Jumpstart Workout Challenge was to cringe. Oh no, I had plenty of challenges, thankyouverymuch. The second time I saw the notice, I’ll admit, I was curious enough to check it out. 28 days of exercise, doing a no-longer-than 10 minutes each strength training video, 5 days of cardio a week and log in my exercise. Hmm, totally simple. And while, other than holiday craziness, I’m pretty good about getting in the cardio, I’ve been trying to incorporate strength for months and haven’t managed it. So hey, this is a good challenge idea, right?
Except I’m insanely crazy busy this month. I have a deadline I’m scary-behind on, I’m in the middle of a promo tour for my Undercover Operatives trilogy with Sex, Lies and Midnight on shelves now, two chapter presentations to give and a trip out of state. So taking on a daily workout challenge would be crazy, right?
Then the new year hit. And I realized that despite my best intentions, and even though I’m getting much closer to my goal weight, I still hadn’t worked in any strength training. So I did it. I took the plunge, and joined the challenge. I figure there’s no time of year that I’m not busy, there will always be reasons and excuses to avoid committing. So I started my 28 days on Monday. Today’s day 4 and I’m still on track
So where are you at with strength training? Are you doing it or avoiding it? Would you take on a challenge like this?
I really let my work out habits slide during 2011, so I’m not where I want to be in strength training. I really do enjoy that body pump class at the gym and have plans to get back to it.
I do like this SparkPeople challenge. I need to do something like that. Best wishes!! I hope 2012 does not have as many challenges as 2011.
Thanks, Michelle
I hope we all have a fabulous, empowered and happy year!
I really do want to make strength training a major focus this year. I know the benefits are tremendous, especially for women as we get older. I think its one of the most under-valued methods of losing weight, too, since it’s a great metabolism booster. But knowing doesn’t always mean doing *g* I’m a cardio junkie so it’s a hard switch to make.
I’ve heard great things about body pump, I hope you do get back to it. And that you have a wonderful year of great habits that make you happy and help you get to your goals
Way to go, Tawny. Hope it works really well for you. I’m planning to get back to my normal rate of exercise today. I have exercised some every day this week, but nowhere near enough. I’ve been pumping out pages like crazy, but as I move into revision mode today I’m planning to have a better balance with the exercise.
