New Beginnings

Easter and spring often make me think of new beginnings.  It is a time of rebirth or renewal, and it can be a good time to pause and reflect on where you are and where you want to be.  I’ve done some thinking along those lines in terms of my journey to become and stay a healthy writer.

One of the new beginnings in my life this spring will be at my regular Weight Watchers meeting.  As I mentioned before, our beloved group leader Melvin is leaving to spend more of his precious free time with his seven-year-old son.  This Tuesday will be my last meeting with him.  This upcoming change has shook me up a bit, and I’ve spent some time here and elsewhere thinking about how to best approach this.  My favorite WW buddy and I have a plan.  Following Elise’s advice, we are going to give the new leader four weeks before we decide anything.  At that point, we can check out other meetings to see if they would be better fits and become our new regular group.  As one of my other WW buddies pointed out, this change could be a great opportunity for some of us regulars to kick start another weight loss run.  I’m feeling a little hopeful and optimistic about it all.

I’m also trying to use the spring and longer daylight hours to help jump start a new beginning in going back to the gym on a regular basis.  I’m trying to work back up to going to the gym at least 3-4 times a week.  I’m not going to set goals for what I will do there.  It may be the elliptical, a cardio class such as Zumba or step, or a weight training class such as body pump.  It may be something new to me like spin or some new kind of yoga.  I just want to get back to working out more regularly.  I made it just once to the gym for Zumba this past week, so this is definitely a work in progress.  :)

This weekend, I’m going to the annual WRW Retreat: In the Company of Writers.  This is one of my favorite events of the year, and I love how it always gives me a jump start on my writing.  I am giving a healthy writer workshop Sunday, and I’m also looking forward to that.  I’m once again following Tawny’s wonderful example and plan to use the retreat as a way to motivate, inspire and energize my fiction writing.

So, in this season of new beginnings, I have three aspects of my healthy writer life that I plan to improve in the next couple of month.  Do you have any new beginnings you would like to start this spring?

Oh, Michelle, I wish I was joining you at the WRW Retreat. It always looks like such a great time.

I’m trying to spend more time focused on writing now that the school year is winding down. April is my most intensive month of the year (with all the prep leading to state testing) but hopefully May will begin me not having to use all my free time at home on schoolwork.

    • That’s great, Mary! Are you a planner? Perhaps you can use some of your first free time to come up with some goals/plans for your writing for this summer. If you aren’t a planner, just diving right in sounds great too!

The WRW retreat is a blast, and it would be so neat if you were going. :)

  2. I’m being more dedicated to tracking food intake and getting in my two hours of exercise each day. I have a lot of deadlines over the spring and summer months, so I’m going to have to be vigilant about sticking to my goals on all fronts.

Have fun at the retreat, and I hope the workshop goes well. I’m sure your story will inspire a lot of the attendees.

    • Best wishes on your food tracking and exercise – especially when your deadlines get closer! I’ve heard, read and experienced how the majority of weight loss comes from the right food choices.

Thanks for your kind words about the retreat and workshop. It should be a great experience!

Yes! My writing season is about to begin…I’ve only written a couple of times this month (sigh), but I’m determined to make serious progress on the book this summer. This week is when I’ll start, in preparation for this weekend’s WRW retreat…which should in turn inspire me to push even more next week!

    • Yay, Elise! We’re going to leave the retreat totally pumped. It’s always a great time!

I mentioned your advice again tonight about dealing with our beloved WW leader leaving. Wow. The last meeting was more emotional than I thought it would be for everyone, but Melvin made many of us say what we were going to do to continue the journey. It was a nice, inspiring night. I also got a couple of photos of myself with Melvin.
