It’s that time again, a new year, a new resolve to get fit, be healthy and make it all work this time!! One of the great things about the seeming world-wide focus right now on weight loss is that great tips and hints and articles on the topic are abundant. Eating plans, healthier foods and how to prepare them, exercise tips, workout challenges, it’s all out there. Yes, I know it’s there year-round, but right now it almost seems like there is a competition to get the best, most insightful information out in front of as many people as possible. Hey, that works for me. I love how easy it is to find motivation!
This was particularly motivating for me. As weight loss is usually my goal, and time is usually my challenge, I tend to focus on cardio more than strength training. But this year, I want to change that. I loved this video of tips for people starting- or restarting – a strength program. I’ve read a lot of exercise articles and information over the years, and am always impressed when I learn something new. In this one, I learned that doing an upright row was a much better bicep exercise than curls!

I’m so excited to welcome 2012 and start a new year. In part, because I love the concept of a clean slate that the new year embodies. But also because, well, to put it bluntly, 2011 sucked. Every year brings challenges. That’s the nature of life. But last year the challenges were delivered by a [...]

As I write this, I am grooving to Christmas Carols and still feeling the happy glow from my local RWA chapter’s holiday party. I have several more holiday season events to look forward to and wonderful friends and family to visit and celebrate with this month. Add the memories of the beautiful and festive Christmas [...]

Over the past week or so, there have been several chilly to cold, rainy, grey, dismal days. That plus stress has had me a bit down. But yesterday I found a way to perk myself up — decorating the Christmas tree while listening to my Christmas music CDs. As I listened to Bing Crosby sing [...]

Something we’ve talked about before here on Healthy Writer is the importance of awareness — of what we’re eating, the exercise we’re getting, our body chemistry, any number of things that can contribute to the success (or failure) of our health and fitness goals. One of the pitfalls I’ve become aware of personally is that [...]

By Anju Gattani Just when I thought workouts were for muscles, I learned a new term, ‘brain fitness’ – the improvement of the cognitive abilities of the brain by exercising the brain. It’s a term used less in the science world and more in the self-help arena. It’s a term that could possibly go hand [...]

By Nancy Northcott Just about a year and a half ago, the Healthy Writer team invited me to guest blog about my plans for getting back into shape. I was going to go back to the gym, cut back on unhealthy foods, and stay focused. I really was. Only I didn’t. Instead, I gained weight. [...]

Somehow the first 10 months of the year have flown by yet again and it’s officially November. After January, it’s my least favorite month. The time changes, making it get dark so early. It’s cold. It seems interminably long. But this year, I’m going into November with a plan to make it through. 1. Exercise [...]

The 36th Marine Corp Marathon was Sunday. My fabulous boyfriend and a colleague from work ran in it. Lucky for me, the race course went right by my street. I got up a little early yesterday morning and walked to the end of my street to watch the runners and cheer for them around the [...]

Last week, we talked about whether carbs could be part of a healthy diet. It may surprise you that after asking that question I was a carb-centric cook this weekend. As I mentioned before, my fabulous boyfriend is running the October 30 Marine Corp Marathon in DC. I wanted to cook him some healthy meals [...]
