Whew!

That sigh of relief you may have heard yesterday was me the moment I sent two books off to my editor. January was crazy with deadlines for me. I wrote two complete young adult books and revised them, and I revised my Harlequin Nocturne book that hopefully will be out next year. I had very long days, wacky sleep patterns, way too little exercise, and horrible eating habits. Consequently, several pounds crept on. Sigh. I never have thought it was fair how it’s so much easier to gain weight than lose it. Oh well, no use in bemoaning what’s already done. It’s just time to do something about it.

Step 1: I began with about 30 minutes of exercise yesterday — 15 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes dancing to really loud music while I folded and put away laundry. I plan to increase the amount each day until I’m back at a really good time commitment.

Step 2: I went an entire day without a dessert, cookie, etc. The closest I came was the brown sugar and raisins I put in my oatmeal.

Step 3: After the stressful, no-days-off January, I’m going to take some time to relax from writing and refill the well. I’m gradually cleaning off my desk so that my work space isn’t cluttered and driving me crazy. I’m going to watch a movie each day this week, and one night I’m going out to see a movie with some friends. I am going to read some books that I didn’t write and some issues of Entertainment Weekly. I’m going to visit my mom.

Next week I’ll get back to writing, but for the rest of this week I’m on a writing vacation. I need it.

When you’re between projects, what do you like to do to refill the well? Do you find yourself having to refocus your health and fitness efforts?

Remember, tomorrow is Feb. 1, the date when a lot of us are starting a month-long effort to really make some positive changes to our health and fitness plans. I hope you’ll join us and set some goals for yourself. Think of tomorrow as your own personal New Year and thus make some New Year’s resolutions.

Target February

Some of you might have noticed that I flat out forgot to do my regular post here last Tuesday. That’s just one of the side effects of my crazy January full of pressing deadlines. The other — I’ve done abysmally on eating and exercise this month. I’ve made some good food choices and gotten a [...]

How Are You Better off Today than You Were a Year Ago?

Happy New Year! There is something about the new year that makes you think about how the past year went and start dreaming about what will happen in the next 365 days.  Several years ago I started to make this a more formal process when I evaluate my past year and set goals for the [...]

Start by Doing Just One Thing

As I write this, I am grooving to Christmas Carols and still feeling the happy glow from my local RWA chapter’s holiday party.  I have several more holiday season events to look forward to and wonderful friends and family to visit and celebrate with this month.  Add the memories of the beautiful and festive Christmas [...]

The importance of awareness

Something we’ve talked about before here on Healthy Writer is the importance of awareness — of what we’re eating, the exercise we’re getting, our body chemistry, any number of things that can contribute to the success (or failure) of our health and fitness goals. One of the pitfalls I’ve become aware of personally is that [...]

Marking a Milestone

Last week, I marked an important milestone on my journey to becoming a healthier writer. On Wednesday, I hit the number on the scale that indicated I’d lost 15 pounds since my highest point at the beginning of February. I will admit to doing a little happy dance once I stepped off the scale. There [...]

Online motivation

Earlier this week, I asked some of the Healthy Writers about some of their favorite health- and fitness-related websites. Here’s a sampling. Mary Curry: World’s Healthiest Foods — This site, which Mary consults frequently in creating her Saturda vegetable posts, is rich with useful information. There are sections on cooking (recipes, seasonal cooking, cooking demos, [...]

Romance Biggest Winner: My Personal Motivation

By Ashley March Almost two weeks ago I posted an announcement on my Twitter and Facebook accounts about the possibility of a Biggest Loser-like weight loss competition for romance readers and authors. The response I received was very enthusiastic, and I’m thrilled to say that the Romance Biggest Winner competition will begin on July 5, [...]
