I couldn’t decide whether to call last night’s episode of The Biggest Loser “The Drama” or “The Whining.” It begin the moment the aqua team came back and lost more than 50 combined pounds to make it onto the ranch. So many contestants were whining about it. No surprise, Conda was the front of the whining pack, but Kim was right there with her.
I liked the excitement and positive attitude Adrian and Daphne brought with them, but it rubbed people the wrong way as did Adrian’s claim that the two of them had been working out 14 hours a day. Kim didn’t believe it and said basically if that were true and they’d only lost 34 and 26 pounds in a month, that it was pathetic. People were also upset that Adrian and Daphne had immunity this first week back, which to me makes sense or they’d of course be the first people voted out.
In the challenge, the teams had to race to bounce different-size balls worth different amounts of points on a small trampoline over a wall into nets held by other team members. At stake was the ability to choose one person from each team whose weight wouldn’t count at the weigh-in. After being behind early, the red team spanked the black team.
The red team had a sit down in which Kim and Conda told Adrian they didn’t like how he’d been forced into their team. Nancy and others basically told him he didn’t need to talk and should just listen. I understand what Nancy was trying to say, that he should perhaps sit back for a bit and try to get to know his teammates before saying a lot. Still, it had a very negative feel about it. The tension on the red team didn’t get any better after the talk, but to his credit Adrian tried to stay positive.
Members of the black team didn’t think Daphne worked as much as she needed to during the “homework” hours when the trainers aren’t with the teams though she did well in the trainer-led workouts. Whatever the reasons, Daphne only lost 1 pound this week and Adrian 2. Though they were accused of “playing the game” since they had immunity this week, they both claimed it was because the diet at the ranch was different than what they were eating at home. At home they were having salads and lean meats, but at the ranch there are a lot more carbs. Whatever the real story is, I can see where the introduction of carbs back into a diet might mess with weight loss.
Numbers at the weigh-in continued to be, for the most part, disappointing. No one was in double digits. The only people who came close were Jeremy and Megan (whose weight didn’t count), both with 9. The red team lost the weigh-in and made a decision that just blows my mind. Though Nancy has had small numbers (4 this week), she’s been getting slowly better and for the most part has a positive attitude and people liked her. By contrast, Conda lost 2 pounds and is one of the most toxic people I’ve ever seen on this show. Not a single person voted for her.
In past seasons, I’ve finished watching episodes and been inspired and pumped up. This season, not so much. I don’t like being around whiny people who are all about the drama, and that’s what this season feels like. My favorite contestant is still Cassandra. So far, she seems like a sweet, positive, hard-working person. As it stands now, I hope she wins the whole thing.
I agree with you, this season (tho I missed the first few episodes) is overly dramatic. It seems the last couple of seasons, everyone got on so well, now it’s like earlier seasons with a lot of tension.
It’s really bugging me. It’s like they’re trying to make it like a lot of the other overly dramatic “reality” shows. Ugh.
I agree, Trish. It was an ugly episode full of drama, wasn’t it? I think the teams tend to be threatened when new people join or return, but these teams seemed particularly unwelcoming.
I liked the aqua team. I’m not sure if they threw the weight in, but it probably was a smart move to do so. They were so clearly unwelcome. Why would they fight for the good of the team by losing as much as they could when they know they are almost guaranteed to be voted off the first time they are up for elimination?
Some of the interactions were like watching a train wreck though. I think there may have been some cultural differences and miscommunication. The intent behind the words often seemed in the best of faith (like your Nancy example), but you could see how the recipient would misinterpret it.
I’m not sure if Conda or Kim ever gave him a shot. It may be that Adrian is bringing out the poison and disfunction that was already there on the red team.
I just thought it was all so unnecessary. I really enjoy the seasons where everyone is so in tune with the real goal of people getting healthy and reclaiming their lives that they genuinely root for each other. This was more like the train wreck that you see on shows like Celebrity Rehab. I honestly feel like writing the network to tell them this season is really turning me off as a loyal viewer.
Michelle, I think you are right about Adrian bringing out dysfunction that is already on the team. And Trish, calling Conda a toxic person is just spot on.
I was shocked at how unwelcoming both teams were to the newcomers. Where was their compassion? How would they have felt if they got all the way to the ranch and were denied entry on the first day. I think that is a cruelty that is just inexcusable.
The group dynamics were textbook. All the splitting and scapegoating. Conda is truly a destructive force in that team and my guess is that the other team members either can’t see it, because they are in it, or they were afraid to vote for her. If she wasn’t booted off then she’d retaliate!!! Appease the dictator at all costs!! Nancy was trying to be the voice of reason so, naturally she had to go. Plus she was so nice, she wouldn’t hate you for voting for her.
Conda might bring reality TV drama to this season, but it makes for very unpleasant viewing. When she goes, everything will change. If she doesn’t go soon I may stop watching.
Trish, I’m not watching The Biggest Loser and so can’t speak to that, but I hate the Drama Kings/Queens of reality TV. They’re such a pain and not sympathetic.
I think positive thinking takes a person farther. Even though I’m a “glass half empty” person by nature, I try not to go with that.
Conda is the one causing all the DRAMA on the show. She is the one that needs to go. She is so obnoxious and arrogant!!She has the nerve to say that Adrian is causing drama ever since he got back to the ranch. She is trying ti convince everyone else to vote him off when its her that needs to go! I can’t stand her.
