The Calorie Climb

Yesterday, I was reading an article online from Men’s Health about why we’re all so much fatter than we used to be. Two out of three of us are overweight or obese. That’s just sad. According to the CDC, in my lifetime men have increased their calorie consumption by 7 percent. Women, a whopping 18 percent!

A big reason we’re consuming more calories is that there are more calories pumped into our prepared foods. We’ve traded health for ease. I don’t think it’s a great trade-off even though I’ve been guilty of it myself on way too many occasions. That’s something I’m really going to focus on in the new year — fresher foods, ones I’ve prepared myself or the freshest things on restaurant menus, instead of the foods I know are bad for me even before I take the first bite. I know this is something I will have to get up and remind myself of each morning until it becomes second nature, but I really, really want to succeed at this.

Anyone else want to join me in this pledge to eat fresher?

What a great idea, Trish! I’ll join you.

We’ve been making more of an effort to eat fresher since we started growing our own veg and fruit. Also hubby’s made good use of his bread-maker, so we rarely buy store bread. So easy to use and only takes minutes, then the machine does the rest.

We’ve also been better about making soups – something else that is easy to do.

I saw an excellent program about how to make your own lunchbox from left-overs by British good food guru Hugh Fearnley-whittingstall. It emphasised how we could easily replace store-bought lunches with our own lunches with little effort.

This is my pledge as well, Trish. Anna, I’ll have to check out Hugh because lunch is my biggest trip-up. One of my students gave me an insulated lunch tote for Christmas and my dog (via DD) gave me an insulated soup thermos. I’m vowing to put both to good use with fresh foods.

Count me in! I try to do fresh whenever possible, but my goal is to replace all processed food with fresh / homemade from now on. Including pasta, and finding fresh sources of non-tofu protein *g*
