Somehow the first 10 months of the year have flown by yet again and it’s officially November. After January, it’s my least favorite month. The time changes, making it get dark so early. It’s cold. It seems interminably long. But this year, I’m going into November with a plan to make it through.
1. Exercise 2 hours every day. I’ve had success with my fitness and weight loss at this rate, so I’m going to really shoot for this every day. Need those endorphins too to battle the potential onset of the winter blues.
2. Enjoy the outdoors for as long as I can. It’s supposed to be sunny and in the high 60s today. That spells going for a walk and/or yard work.
3. Try one new healthy recipe a week.
4. Write the first draft of the second novel in my YA trilogy. Books 2 and 3 are both due Feb. 1, so it’s pretty easy to figure out what I’ll be doing over the winter months.
5. Read a book a week. Sometimes when you’re a writer, the reading takes a back seat, especially if you’re on deadline. But reading is what got me into writing in the first place. I’m currently reading World War Z by Max Brooks and Heartland Wedding by Renee Ryan.
6. Watch good, creativity-inspiring television. I’m not a random TV watcher, or a channel surfer. I set my TiVo for certain programs, and that’s typically it. Some of the new shows this season that have set my creative synapses firing are Terra Nova, Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and Hart of Dixie. And then there are returning favorites like The Walking Dead, Hawaii 5-0, and Castle. And the western lover in me is really looking forward to the premiere of Hell on Wheels this Sunday night.
Now here are my questions for you:
1. What is your least favorite month and why?
2. What are your goals for this month?
3. What are you currently reading?
4. What TV programs are you enjoying? Remember, you can use TV and other hobbies as rewards for meeting your daily goals.
Go you, Trish – love the positive approach!
1. I don’t mind November, though I agree with you on the shorter, gloomier days and the cold. But, somehow, it’s a pleasant change from the summer. February, on the other hand, sucks! By then I need light and spring and warmth! LOL
2. To keep up my daily step target of 7500 and kick it up a notch by the end of the month to 8000. I also need to get my head down on my writing. I’d like to have my proposed Intrigue finished by the end of January (I’m a slow writer!), so I need to be at the halfway point by the end of November.
3. Well, I just finished my last book, so I need to select a new one. I’m deciding between starting to read Cindy Gerard (a friend recommended her) or Dee Davis’ latest series. I’ve been reading historical, so fancy a change of pace … but I’m saving the latest JD Robb until I’ve got time to sit and savour *g*.
4. I’m like you – I don’t watch random TV. On my iPad are Leverage, Body of Proof, Rizzoli and Isles and The Closer. I also enjoy Downton Abbey. I’m making my husband an Advent calendar, so am using my hour’s TV time in the evening to do the cross-stitching too.
Go on those steps, Anna! And good luck with your Intrigue. I know you’ve had an incredibly busy month, so I’m glad you’ll be back to writing more.
Leverage is one I have on my Netflix queue to start watching.
I want to get back to cross-stitching. I haven’t done that in a long time. I also want to take a sewing class.
I don’t have a least favorite month – though I can get sick of winter or summer towards the end of it. I like the 4 seasons.
I’m very impressed by goal #3.
I’m going to be on vacation for half of November, so one of my goals is to enjoy it. I’d really like to use the fall back time change to get me getting up early enough to go to the gym before work. My exercise has really slipped this year – and I’ve been eating out a lot more – and it’s not been a good thing for how my pants fit.
As you know, I don’t watch tons of TV other than the news, which I watch regularly. Love the News Hour. I have been watching Buffy with the fabulous boyfriend as it is one of his favorites and I’ve never seen it. We are now a few shows into season 2. Spike was introduced in the last episode we saw – very fun.
This may shock you – I just World War Z a couple weekends ago. It was fun. It inspired me to read a Studs Terkel book, which was a little disappointing. Since then, I’ve been on a nonfiction kick.
I’m almost done with a great current affairs/business/economy book – All the Devils are Here the secret history of the financial collapse. It is so good – though absolutely nobody looks good in it. OWS and everyone else should read it. I plan to read the Ron Suskind book on the first couple years of the Obama administration after that and read some history books on Austria. I’m going there in a couple of weeks and am very excited!
Austria — how cool! I hope you have a marvelous time.
I’m glad you’re enjoying Buffy. Spike is a hoot, isn’t he? And James Marsters, who plays him, is so nice in person.
Good luck with getting to the gym.
Least favorite month is January. My birthday is in December and I love to share it with family. And of course, Christmas is next, with more family gatherings.
My goal for this month is to write at least a hundred pages of a story about a baseball player and the woman he thinks is a psychiatrist who will help him get back his swing.
I am reading a wonderful book that might interfere with the above goal: “The Art of Fielding” by Chad Harbach. Can’t put it down!
I like The Closer and Castle, but forget to turn on the TV when they are on and never get around to Tivoing them.
Did you notice I neglected to mention exercise? Well, I’m back doing Yoga twice a week and try to walk every day… mostly.
A.Y., good for you on the yoga and walking. I need to work in some yoga, pilates or something into my exercise repertoire.
Go on those 100 pages! It’s National Novel Writing Month, so lots of people will be pumping out pages.
Love the sound of your story! Love sports star heroes – I write hockey heroes *g*
Hi Trish,
inspiring post! I don’t have a least favorite month but this month’s goals are to promote the release of my debut novel, DUTY & DESIRE, and work and finish the research on the third novel – a wip. I just finished reading a women’s fiction book ‘The Exiles’ which I brought back from my India trip. I have several on my to-read list… still can’t figure out which one!
As for TV… just started watching some new sitcoms… Last Man Standing and The Middle (an old one) and am going to try and keep up with them. Exercise is my evergreen morning fad and I’m going to try keep up with the Yoga which we just learned as a family – that’s hard because of the time involved.
But this 3rd novel is the biggie for me… it’s like climbing a mountain and I still can’t see the summit! *sigh*
Congrats on your debut, Anju! The first book out is always special.
Congrats on the debut, Anju.
I watch almost no network TV. I’m very fond of Project Runway and Say Yes To The Dress. Another favorite is I Survived. I have very idiosyncratic TV watching habits!
Michelle, how exciting to go to Austria!
I do dislike all of winter, especially the dark nights starting at 5 pm!
I don’t make a habit of watching it, but I always enjoy Project Runway when I see it. There are so many parallels with the writing journey.
Jumping in late because my goal is to get my writing done first. Over 1000 words so far today so I’m popping in here while my tea brews.
Least favorite month – July – always TOO hot. I prefer the cold months over hot any time.
Goal – see above re: writing. Trying to make time for the healthier recipes too. Last night I made the Lentil/butternut squash stew with Garam Masala that I posted about on Saturday. I used Kale instead of Swiss Chard – it tasted great and I felt so good for eating something so terrifically healthy.
Reading – so many. Just finished Tina Radcliffe’s Oklahoma Reunion which was really good – heartwarming. Reading Roald Dahl’s The Witches with my class. Always fun.
TV – really none regularly. I catch up with Castle on Hulu. I’m way behind though. Behind on Glee too. I keep meaning to try Once Upon a Time and Grimm.
Yay on meeting your writing goal. That’s a good plan, to meet the goal before giving in to the temptation of online activities.
I’m very late.
Least fave month is Feb. It is in the horrible part of winter. The nights are not light and there is little to look forward to…
Goals for this month — get my first draft of the Viking done. I have promised my editor the partial for next Monday.
With exercise, it is to continue doing Tracy Anderson and to take rest days, so to do it 6 x per week instead of every day as I am now in maintenance as I don’t want to go down another dress size! And moving into maintenance does mess with your head.
Currently reading: The Secrets of Skinny Chicks by Karen Brennan. Basically I want to understand how to go to doing the maintenance. There are loads of books on dieting and very few on maintaining and what happens AFTER you have reached your weight goals.
TV — I am really enjoying Downton Abbey series 2. There is one more episode to go. And then a Christmas special.
