That sigh of relief you may have heard yesterday was me the moment I sent two books off to my editor. January was crazy with deadlines for me. I wrote two complete young adult books and revised them, and I revised my Harlequin Nocturne book that hopefully will be out next year. I had very long days, wacky sleep patterns, way too little exercise, and horrible eating habits. Consequently, several pounds crept on. Sigh. I never have thought it was fair how it’s so much easier to gain weight than lose it. Oh well, no use in bemoaning what’s already done. It’s just time to do something about it.
Step 1: I began with about 30 minutes of exercise yesterday — 15 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes dancing to really loud music while I folded and put away laundry. I plan to increase the amount each day until I’m back at a really good time commitment.
Step 2: I went an entire day without a dessert, cookie, etc. The closest I came was the brown sugar and raisins I put in my oatmeal.
Step 3: After the stressful, no-days-off January, I’m going to take some time to relax from writing and refill the well. I’m gradually cleaning off my desk so that my work space isn’t cluttered and driving me crazy. I’m going to watch a movie each day this week, and one night I’m going out to see a movie with some friends. I am going to read some books that I didn’t write and some issues of Entertainment Weekly. I’m going to visit my mom.
Next week I’ll get back to writing, but for the rest of this week I’m on a writing vacation. I need it.
When you’re between projects, what do you like to do to refill the well? Do you find yourself having to refocus your health and fitness efforts?
Remember, tomorrow is Feb. 1, the date when a lot of us are starting a month-long effort to really make some positive changes to our health and fitness plans. I hope you’ll join us and set some goals for yourself. Think of tomorrow as your own personal New Year and thus make some New Year’s resolutions.
Congratulations on finishing all those deadlines!
Refilling the well? Glorying in great stories help. Sometimes getting out in nature, going to a fabulous historical site or museum, seeing a great play, etc. all help.
I find myself having to refocus my health and fitness efforts regularly. That may just be a part of the journey. I don’t like the part of me that thinks trashing my body while I try to achieve other huge goals is a good thing, but it’s not a conscious decision so think is probably not the right verb. When I’m in the right place, I can avoid that default to trash my body, but I’m not always in the right place. Good luck refocusing.
Yay for the Healthy Writers’ February Challenge! I need it.
Congrats on finishing your books and meeting those deadlines – I stand in awe!!
Yay on the refocusing too.
I’m way behind, for a variety of reasons. The one thing that tends to suffer when I’m on deadline or falling behind is the exercise, so I need to get back on track with that.
I tend to refill the well with books and movies or TV series and a break from writing.
